What You Need to Know About CFLs

  • How many light bulbs will be replaced?
    Between 10 to 20

Where will you replace my light bulbs?
Bulbs will be replaced in the most high use rooms of your home, typically hallways, living rooms, kitchens, dens, and home offices.

Who pays for the CFL Bulbs?
The lighting program and the CFLs are paid for by a grant from the US Department of Energy.

What happens to the old bulbs?
The old inefficient bulbs will be taken and recycled.

Where can I take a CFL if it breaks or burns out?
You can take your broken and burnt-out CFLs to your local Home Depot, Lowes, Whole Foods, and several other local hardware stores and markets. Also, check to see if your town’s transfer station recycles them.

Can I skip this and get a HES visit instead?
Yes, you can. Sign up for a Home Energy Solutions (HES) visit and you'll receive up to 25 CFL bulbs.

  • Who is eligible?
You are eligible if you are a resident of a participating Neighbor to Neighbor town and have not yet completed a Home Energy Solutions assessment.

Why do you ask for access to my utility information?
By providing us with access to utility information, you can receive continuous feedback while your community earns valuable rewards. The information also allows us all to understand our collective impact and report it to the U.S. Department of Energy. This information is kept confidential. We do not look at your home’s individualized energy use, but collective as a town.

I’ve heard CFLs contain mercury. Does that make them dangerous?
CFLs do contain a small amount of mercury. By regulation they must contain less than 5 mg of mercury; that’s about a thousand times less than an old (non-electric) thermostat. The mercury is also contained within the spiral. For more details on safe clean up of a broken bulb, contact your Clean Energy Corps representative.
